Fine Firefly Aluminum Powder Recipe

Read and review these Fireworks Safety Articles before starting any fireworks project.

This is a pyrotechnic formula for making firefly aluminum firework stars.

Materials Needed Years ago, Steve Majdali gave us a firework star recipe for the twinkling silver/white effect known as "firefly." It’s a beautiful firework star, when made using the right aluminum powder. We provide a slightly modified version of Steve’s recipe with our firefly aluminum.

Firefly Composition
Potassium nitrate 49 parts
Airfloat charcoal 29 parts
80 mesh charcoal 11 parts
Sulfur 9 parts
Firefly aluminum 5 parts
Dextrin To taste or 5 parts

All parts are by weight. Use water or 25% alcohol, 75% water to bind this firework star. You can make the firework star more interesting by substituting pine charcoal for the airfloat. Pine charcoal leaves a redder spark trail than other charcoals.
