Learning how to make a smoke bomb is easy. But actually making
smoke bombs from scratch can be tricky. Colored smoke in a smoke bomb is
produced by the smoldering (not burning) of a carefully balanced mix of
a smoke fuel and an oxidizer, usually potassium chlorate.
Making homemade smoke bombs normally poses two common problems: Finding small quantities of organic powdered dye, and getting the mix exactly right.
Mix your smoke bomb chemicals one way, and you get no colored smoke. Mix the smoke chemicals the other way, and everything catches fire, burning with an ugly brown smoke. Mix everything just right, and you get rich clouds of beautifully colored smoke.
