You can use hand-made black powder with this kit. You definitely do not need a ball mill.

If you're going to hand-mix your black powder rocket fuel, you'll need a screen--40-mesh is best. If you don't already have one, you can add it to your order. For hand-mixed BP, you'll also need a blade-type coffee mill (cheap at WalMart).

Now, if you want to make black powder easier, faster, and with less work, a ball mill is the way to go (use lead balls to mill your BP). You can definitely crank out more BP with far less work and hassle this way.

The tubes provided in this kit are made to be very lightweight, so that your finished rockets will fly the maximum distance.

So, when you ram the clay and fuel into this tube, you must ram it relatively lightly (especially if you have ever made rockets before using larger, parallel wound tubes).

If you ram the chemicals too hard, the tube will break. If you ram them too lightly, there will be air pockets in the fuel grain, and your rocket will blow up.

So don't be surprised or worried if you split the tube on your first one or two tries. If that happens, just back off on your ramming pressure, until you get it right. If your rocket explodes when you light it, ram the clay and fuel a little harder next time.

You can fly your black powder rockets day or night, with or without a heading. Flying Fish fuse and Falling Leaves fuse make great, light-weight headings.
